Hidden away between the high profile surfing coastlines of Southern Portugal and Northern Morocco is a wave rich wonderland called the Costa de la Luz. Host to several barreling beach breaks and a few excellent point and reef breaks this coastline offers masses of surfing potential!
The coastline is amazingly diverse for the short distance that it occupies. With powerful high quality beach break waves to long walled up reefs and points this area will satisfy every level of surfer.
As with all classic beach breaks there will be rips present when the surf is big, some of the more challenging spots will involve long paddles and being aware of entry and exit spots.
The best winds for the beaches come from the easterly quadrant whilst the optimum wind for the points blows from the North.
The swells are produced by deep North Atlantic low pressures that are frequently seen in the Northern Hemisphere Winter. Once greeted by calm sunny local weather conditions (frequent on the Costa de la Luz) you have the ingredients for a fantastic surfing environment. The area is also a haven for beginners as the beach of El Palmar offers great nursery style waves with a soft sandy bottom. There is a well organized surf school on the beach Óceano Surf School who offer lessons for all levels and equipment hire for all standards of surfing. If the waves at El Palmar are not suitable due to local weather conditions, there is also a variety of other beaches that will have waves on any given day.
